Wings over Illawarra is set to tear the skies apart this weekend at Illawarra Regional Airport and with the great weather forecast, promises to be the best yet! There is more excitement and action in the air and on the ground than ever before.
Organisers of the country’s largest annually staged airshow, Bright Events Pty Ltd are thrilled to bring thirteen aircraft from the Australian Defence Force and twenty-seven civilian aircraft to display at the event year. “The flying program promises to be full of action and excitement on both days and will include classic warbirds conducting aerobatic manoeuvres culminating with the now famed ‘Wall of Fire’ starring the Hawk 127 jet on both days of the airshow” said organiser Mark Bright.
A first for Wings Over Illawarra this year will be a handling display by the big boys of the skies, transport aircraft, the C-17 Globemaster III, C-27J Spartan and the C-130J Hercules on both days of the show. The RAAF’s newest maritime surveillance aircraft, the P-8A Poseidon will also return this year along with the Royal Australian Navy’s MH-60R Seahawk ‘Romeo’ helicopter. The RAAF will be giving a sneak peek of the new Pilatus PC-21s which will ultimately be the chosen aircraft of the much-loved RAAF Roulettes.
There will also be a great line-up of warbirds on the flight line including the P-40 Kittyhawk and the Spitfire MK.XVI, both of which are making their Wings Over Illawarra debut. For the adrenalin junkies who love the aerobatic stunts, the program will feature a stellar line up of the county’s best dare-devil pilots including Red Bull air-racer Matt Hall, Paul Bennet and the Sky Aces, Mark Pracy, the Russian Roolettes and Wollongong’s Chris Clark in his PT-17 Boeing Stearman.
The event has fast grown to be more than just an airshow and has a staggering number of ground displays, entertainment and action including a free carnival for all ages, a beer garden and bar, a stunning display of top of the range BMW vehicles and food outlets galore.
There will also be four world class freestyle motocross displays throughout the weekend plus a chance to ride on the Harrigan Isuzu UTE Iron Summit, the Land Rover Experience and complimentary access to all Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) aircraft that are open for inspection.
